I just purchased a nook, and I want to buy a book for it. However, the wifi at my house isn’t working
Is there a way to just directly download the books from the Barnes and Noble website on to my nook?

Yes, buy the books on your computer. Connect your Nook to the computer through USB cable, then copy the books to your Nook.
However, among the ebook readers, the Amazon Kindle is the best I’ll say. I recommend this article, it mentioned Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Barnes and Nobles, and other ebook readers by the end of the review:

There are huge selection of free books for the Kindle as well, as you can find here:

Finally, Amazon just released a new Kindle DX with 50% better contrast and further price cut. I put the link below for you to check out yourself.
Guess it’ll help you decide.
Yes, you can download books through your computer, then copy the book to the Nook through USB connection with your computer.
And I’ve just given some detailed review about the Nook and comparison with the Kindle, in a previous question here:

The alternatives to wifi are:
Download using 3G.
Download using a normal computer, connect a card reader and put books onto a microSD card (your nook will have a slot for this). This isn’t that expensive, a reader is about £5-10 and a microSD card is the same cost depending on speed and capacity.
You can get books onto your Nook 3 ways if you have the original Nook. There are now 2 versions(1st is the original for which is now 199 has a 3g radio and 2nd is the new Nook wifi for 149 no 3g radio-wifi only). If you have the original nook you can download via wifi network any wifi hotspot on att&t 3g network or any wifi hotspot. The nook will automatically try to connect via wifi. You can also download via the 3g network if your nook is capable of that(if you bought the one for 149 then this option is not for you). You go to the wifi button on your nook if you have it in airplane mode you will need to turn that off, you’ll notice the wifi trying to connect, hit the wi-fi line to disconnect the the wifi go back to the home row of buttons and go to the shop it will then default to the 3g network. You can’t surf the web but you can shop for books and download them. Your 3rd option is to connect your nook to your computer via usb cable. Don’t forget to download the barnes and noble ereader app to your computer and sync your nook to that. There is a nook tour and a nook user guide that comes on your nook. In case you don’t want to try to find it on the nook here is the link for the support page to download the manual and quick start guide:

Hope this helps, and congrats on the Nook-I absolutely adore mine.
